Larry Godfrey\u00a0<\/strong>eases through to the last 16 of the men’s archery with a convincing\u00a07-1 victory<\/a>\u00a0over Juan Rene Serrano of Mexico.<\/p>\n

ATHLETICS<\/h4>\n

Freya Murray\u00a0<\/strong>is chosen to\u00a0replace Paula Radcliffe<\/a>\u00a0in the women’s marathon.<\/p>\n

BASKETBALL<\/h4>\n

The\u00a0women’s\u00a0<\/strong>side suffer a second straight defeat,\u00a0going down 73-65<\/a>\u00a0to Canada. They face Russia, who have won both their opening games, in their next match.<\/p>\n

BEACH VOLLEYBALL<\/h4>\n

John Garcia-Thompson and Steve Grotowski\u00a0<\/strong>are\u00a0beaten 2-0<\/a>\u00a0by Brazilian pairing Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti in their opening Pool F game.<\/p>\n

CANOEING<\/h4>\n

The pairings of\u00a0Tim Baillie and Etienne Stott\u00a0<\/strong>(fourth) and\u00a0David Florence and Richard Hounslow\u00a0<\/strong>(seventh) make it safely through to the semi-final of the\u00a0C2 double slalom.<\/a><\/p>\n

Hannah Craig\u00a0<\/strong>qualifies for the semi-finals of the\u00a0K1 Kayak Canoe Slalom<\/a>\u00a0by finishing 14th overall.<\/p>\n

Former world and European bronze medallist\u00a0Lizzie Neave\u00a0<\/strong>makes\u00a0two penalty-free runs<\/a>\u00a0down the 25-gate white water course and finishes second overall.<\/p>\n

DIVING<\/h4>\n

Tom Daley\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Peter Waterfield\u00a0<\/strong>finish fourth<\/a>\u00a0in the men’s synchronised 10m platform final.<\/p>\n

EQUESTRIAN<\/h4>\n

After the cross-country section of the\u00a0team eventing<\/a>\u00a0competition,\u00a0Great Britain\u00a0<\/strong>are in second position with just the showjumping to come.<\/p>\n

Kristina Cook\u00a0<\/strong>is the highest ranking competitor in the\u00a0individual standing,<\/a>\u00a0lying fifth, with\u00a0Mary King\u00a0<\/strong>one place behind.\u00a0Zara Phillips\u00a0<\/strong>is joint 10th,\u00a0Nicola Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>20th and\u00a0William Fox-Pitt\u00a0<\/strong>22nd.<\/p>\n

FENCING<\/h4>\n

Simona Gherman proves too strong for Great Britain’s\u00a0Corinna Lawrence\u00a0<\/strong>in the last 32 of the women’s epee. The 22-year-old had beaten Chilean Caterin Bravo Aranguiz 15-12 in the first round, but\u00a0lost 15-9<\/a>\u00a0to an opponent ranked fourth in the world.<\/p>\n

GYMNASTICS<\/h4>\n

The GB men’s team of\u00a0Louis Smith, Daniel Purvis, Kristian Thomas, Max Whitlock and Sam Oldham\u00a0<\/strong>win BRONZE<\/a>\u00a0in the gymnastics team competition, their first medal in the event in 100 years. GB,\u00a0who scored 271.711 points,<\/a>\u00a0were originally placed second until fourth-placed Japan had their score increased on appeal and were elevated to silver.<\/p>\n

HANDBALL<\/h4>\n

The\u00a0women’s\u00a0<\/strong>side fall to a second consecutive defeat, this time losing37-16 to Russia.<\/a><\/p>\n

HOCKEY<\/h4>\n

The\u00a0men\u00a0<\/strong>begin their campaign with an impressive\u00a04-1 victory<\/a>\u00a0over Argentina, with Barry Middleton netting a brace for the side.<\/p>\n

JUDO<\/h4>\n

Sarah Clark\u00a0<\/strong>goes out as she is beaten\u00a01-0<\/a>\u00a0by Automne Pavia of France.<\/p>\n

Daniel Williams\u00a0<\/strong>loses\u00a0by an ippon<\/a>\u00a0to 2008 bronze medallist Rasul Boqiev of Tajikistan and goes out of the men’s -73kg in the round of 32.<\/p>\n

ROWING<\/h4>\n

Kath Grainger\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Anna Watkins\u00a0<\/strong>break the Olympic record<\/a>\u00a0in the women’s double sculls with a time of\u00a06:44.33<\/a>\u00a0to win the first heat and go straight through to the final.<\/p>\n

The men’s four crew of\u00a0Andy Gregory, Pete Reed, Tom James\u00a0<\/strong>andAndrew Triggs Hodge\u00a0<\/strong>comfortably win heat two in\u00a05:50.27<\/a>\u00a0and progress to the semi-finals. Australia set a new Olympic record in heat one but are not due to meet Great Britain until the final.<\/p>\n

GB men\u00a0<\/strong>achieve a convincing win in the eight repechage in\u00a05:26.85,<\/a>holding off a fast finish from the Canadians, to go into Wednesday’s final.<\/p>\n

Melanie Wilson, Beth Rodford, Frances Houghton\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Debbie Flood\u00a0<\/strong>produce a great finish to take third in the women’s quadruple sculls repechage and progress to the final in a time of\u00a06:21.65.<\/a><\/p>\n

SAILING<\/h4>\n

Ben Ainslie\u00a0<\/strong>finishes sixth<\/a>\u00a0in race three of the Finn class and slips a little further off the pace in the overall standings with Jonas Hogh Cristensen six clear of him on four points.<\/p>\n

Defending Star class champions\u00a0Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson\u00a0<\/strong>climb to the top of the standings with a\u00a0second place in race four.<\/a><\/p>\n

It was a disappointing opening day for Britain’s defending laser championPaul Goodison.\u00a0<\/strong>The Sheffield-born sailor\u00a0comes 23rd in the second race<\/a>\u00a0to end the day 17th overall after finishing 10th in the first race.<\/p>\n

Stevie Morrison\u00a0<\/strong>and Ben Rhodes\u00a0<\/strong>come home\u00a012th in races one and two<\/a>\u00a0of the 49er to leave them 12th overall.<\/p>\n

GB Laser Radial sailor\u00a0Alison Young\u00a0<\/strong>lies 10th<\/a>\u00a0after her second race.<\/p>\n

In the women’s match racing,\u00a0Lucy MacGregor, sister Kate and Annie Lush\u00a0<\/strong>beat Portugal<\/a>\u00a0and are in\u00a0joint fifth place<\/a>\u00a0overall.<\/p>\n

SHOOTING<\/h4>\n

James Huckle\u00a0<\/strong>finishes 24th in a field of 47 in the\u00a010m air rifle<\/a>\u00a0and goes out with a score of\u00a0593 out of 600.<\/a><\/p>\n

SWIMMING<\/h4>\n

Liam Tancock\u00a0<\/strong>finishes fifth<\/a>\u00a0in the men’s 100m backstroke final.<\/p>\n

World record-holder\u00a0Gemma Spofforth\u00a0<\/strong>is fifth in the women’s 100m backstroke final,<\/a>\u00a0unable to improve on her fourth place in Beijing.<\/p>\n

Robbie Renwick\u00a0<\/strong>finishes sixth<\/a>\u00a0in the men’s 200m freestyle final.<\/p>\n

Caitlin McClatchey\u00a0<\/strong>is second in the second semi-final in the women’s 200m freestyle to qualify for the final sixth fastest. Earlier in the day, McClatchey\u00a0won her heat<\/a>\u00a0but\u00a0Rebecca Turner\u00a0<\/strong>finished sixth in heat three in a time of\u00a01:58.98.<\/a>\u00a0With the top 16 going through,\u00a0she finished 17th.<\/a><\/p>\n

Hannah Miley\u00a0<\/strong>finishes second<\/a>\u00a0in the 200m individual medley semi-final with a\u00a0time of 2:10.89.<\/a><\/p>\n

Sophie Allen\u00a0<\/strong>finishes fifth in heat four with\u00a02:14.72,<\/a>\u00a0which is\u00a021st overall,<\/a>\u00a0so she goes out.<\/p>\n

In the men’s 200m butterfly,\u00a0Joe Roebuck\u00a0<\/strong>is seventh in heat three with a time of\u00a01:56.97,<\/a>\u00a0while\u00a0Roberto Pavoni\u00a0<\/strong>also finishes seventh in heat five(1:57.55).<\/a>\u00a0Neither time is\u00a0good enough to qualify<\/a>\u00a0for the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Paul Drinkhall’s\u00a0<\/strong>singles tournament is over<\/a>\u00a0as he is beaten\u00a04-0<\/a>\u00a0by Ukrainian-born German Dimitrij Ovtcharov in the third round.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0women’s\u00a0<\/strong>team enjoy a\u00a03-2 victory<\/a>\u00a0over Algeria to pick up their first victory in the event at the Games.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0women’s\u00a0<\/strong>side suffer a narrow defeat in their opening fixture against Russia\u00a0losing 7-6,<\/a>\u00a0despite three goals from Angie Winstanley-Smith.<\/p>\n

WEIGHTLIFTING<\/h4>\n

In Group B of the women’s 58kg weightlifting,\u00a0Zoe Smith\u00a0<\/strong>lifts 90kg in the snatch at her first attempt and then lifts\u00a0a new British record<\/a>\u00a0and personal best in the clean and jerk\u00a0of 121kg,<\/a>\u00a0leaving her 11th overall once Group A completed their lifts.
