The 22-year-old had beaten Chilean Caterin Bravo Aranguiz 15-12 in the first round, but\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/fencing\/event\/women-epee\/phase=few002500\/index.html\">lost 15-9<\/a>\u00a0to an opponent ranked fourth in the world.<\/p>\n<h4>GYMNASTICS<\/h4>\n<p>The GB men&#8217;s team of\u00a0<strong>Louis Smith, Daniel Purvis, Kristian Thomas, Max Whitlock and Sam Oldham\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/olympics\/2012\/live-video\/p00w2wz6\">win BRONZE<\/a>\u00a0in the gymnastics team competition, their first medal in the event in 100 years. Australia set a new Olympic record in heat one but are not due to meet Great Britain until the final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GB men\u00a0<\/strong>achieve a convincing win in the eight repechage in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/rowing\/event\/men-eight\/index.html?v=20120730-095855927\">5:26.85,<\/a>holding off a fast finish from the Canadians, to go into Wednesday&#8217;s final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melanie Wilson, Beth Rodford, Frances Houghton\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Debbie Flood\u00a0<\/strong>produce a great finish to take third in the women&#8217;s quadruple sculls repechage and progress to the final in a time of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/rowing\/event\/women-quadruple-sculls\/phase=row042800\/index.html\">6:21.65.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>SAILING<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Ben Ainslie\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/sailing\/event\/finn-men\/phase=sam002903\/index.html\">finishes sixth<\/a>\u00a0in race three of the Finn class and slips a little further off the pace in the overall standings with Jonas Hogh Cristensen six clear of him on four points.<\/p>\n<p>Defending Star class champions\u00a0<strong>Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson\u00a0<\/strong>climb to the top of the standings with a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/sailing\/event\/star-men\/phase=sam007904\/index.html\">second place in race four.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was a disappointing opening day for Britain&#8217;s defending laser champion<strong>Paul Goodison.\u00a0<\/strong>The Sheffield-born sailor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/sailing\/event\/laser-men\/phase=sam004901\/index.html\">comes 23rd in the second race<\/a>\u00a0to end the day 17th overall after finishing 10th in the first race.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stevie Morrison\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and Ben Rhodes\u00a0<\/strong>come home\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/sailing\/event\/49er-men\/phase=sam009901\/index.html\">12th in races one and two<\/a>\u00a0of the 49er to leave them 12th overall.<\/p>\n<p>GB Laser Radial sailor\u00a0<strong>Alison Young\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/sailing\/event\/laser-radial-women\/phase=saw103902\/index.html\">lies 10th<\/a>\u00a0after her second race.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s match racing,\u00a0<strong>Lucy MacGregor, sister Kate and Annie Lush\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/sailing\/event\/elliott-6m-wmr\/match=saw010920\/index.html\">beat Portugal<\/a>\u00a0and are in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/sailing\/event\/elliott-6m-wmr\/groups.html\">joint fifth place<\/a>\u00a0overall.<\/p>\n<h4>SHOOTING<\/h4>\n<p><strong>James Huckle\u00a0<\/strong>finishes 24th in a field of 47 in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/0\/olympics\/18906280\">10m air rifle<\/a>\u00a0and goes out with a score of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/london2012.bbc.co.uk\/shooting\/event\/men-10m-air-rifle\/phase=shm101900\/index.html\">593 out of 600.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>SWIMMING<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Liam Tancock\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/0\/olympics\/18906930%20-%20Fifth-placed%20Tancock%20misses%20out\">finishes fifth<\/a>\u00a0in the men&#8217;s 100m backstroke final.<\/p>\n<p>World record-holder\u00a0<strong>Gemma Spofforth\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/0\/olympics\/18906849\">is fifth in the women&#8217;s 100m backstroke final,<\/a>\u00a0unable to improve on her fourth place in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robbie Renwick\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/0\/olympics\/18906799\">finishes sixth<\/a>\u00a0in the men&#8217;s 200m freestyle final.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Caitlin McClatchey\u00a0<\/strong>is second in the second semi-final in the women&#8217;s 200m freestyle to qualify for the final sixth fastest.
